About the Author

Deb Darwin.jpg

Debbie calls Australia home, but was born and raised in the North Island of New Zealand. Moving to Australia when she was twenty, she lived in Sydney for eleven years.

Backpacking across Asia and Europe in her mid-twenties, she visited Perth, Western Australia, a few years later, falling in love with the place.  Within nine months she’d packed up her life and moved, making Perth home, meeting her partner and raising her son.

It was Debbie’s son that started her obsession with zombies by getting his mum to play Call of Duty Black Ops. He would then spend most of his time running around in the game trying to keep his mum alive. Nonetheless, thanks to her son, Debbie is now an avid zombie aficionado.

Debbie reads as much as spare time allows across many genres however it goes without saying that she loves apocalyptic and dystopian fiction. She loves to travel and visit countries where the culture is different to her own. Nepal and Morocco being two of her favourite places.

She lives with her partner Jeff and black labrador retriever Monty (who also happens to like olives and mulberries). Her son has since spread his wings and lives in Melbourne.

As someone who calls Perth home, I found it so interesting seeing a place I know and love turned into the setting for such a gruesome horror story. There was something so intriguing about recognising familiar places whilst imagining them in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.

What really stood out to me was just how real and believable the apocalypse felt. The author’s attention to detail when describing the bigger events really helped bring everything to life, but it was the smaller details that made the biggest impression on me.

I loved how the book showed that during an apocalypse, ordinary problems can suddenly become extraordinary problems. Things we would normally consider minor inconveniences can become genuinely difficult or even life-threatening when the world around you is falling apart. Zac needing to have his braces removed is such a great example of this. It’s such a normal, everyday thing, but suddenly there’s no easy way to deal with it. I really appreciated that the author didn’t forget about these little inconveniences we experience in everyday life. Those details added another layer of realism and made the zombie apocalypse feel much more believable.

The characters also felt very realistic and relatable. I usually prefer books written in first person, so the multiple POVs took me a little while to get used to, but I think they worked well for this story and allowed us to experience the outbreak from different perspectives.

I also loved how unpredictable the story was. I genuinely wasn’t sure what was going to happen next, which kept me invested right to the end.

Whispers from Readers

The story follows a group of characters as they try to reach safety, while searching for enough food, supplies and resources to survive the apocalypse.

The author captured and portrayed the characters in a way that was likeable and easy to connect with, which made me genuinely care about what happened to them. There was good balance between tense action scenes and the relationships between the survivors.

The fighting and zombie scenes created plenty of suspense while the relationships provided another layer to the story. I particularly enjoyed how the story kept moving between these different elements without becoming confusing or overly complicated.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and found it incredibly easy to get into. I genuinely couldn’t put it down and would recommend it to anyone who loves a good zombie story.

I have read ALOT of zombie books and I am always looking for a different take. The author smashes this out of the park!

The characters are well developed and realistic, the choices they make are believable.

Honestly top ten zombie book I’ve ever read!
